Our History

We met at the University of Concepción, where we both studied Commercial Engineering. We always had the fascination to know Chile, its people and its customs, so since our children Diego and Isidora were small we dedicated ourselves to travel especially the south of this wonderful country.
Trekking, fishing, a lamb on a stick, enjoying the silence and landscape, seeing the Chucao playing among the ferns, and so many other wonders, were the common factor of our holidays and how many weekends we could take advantage of.

Generate a project through which to realize the old desire to settle in Chiloé, and that would allow us to deliver an interesting proposal, understanding how much it is valued to be in a place where experiences are what make the difference, and where the details are transformed into the relevant; They challenged us to put all our energy into a venture where the landscape, being able to know and enjoy, are lived in first person.

Welcome to Hotel y Cava Estancia Rilán

Our Offer

We aspire to be the link through which you discover all the magic of Chiloé, and that in this first-person encounter with the Chilean insular Patagonia, you get to know the fauna, flora and customs of the south, where the result of this experience is curiosity, enjoyment, joy, rest and the
desire to return and continue to know.

For this we have worked with passion and professionalism; looking for the right place, designing and building a beautiful, noble proposal that would make the landscape framed in each point of its structure; what we achieved thanks to the Office of Architecture Ortuzar and Guebauer, who together with a great team knew how to unveil and capture everything.

Our commitment is to offer a transparent proposal, which integrates the community through its different services, through collaborative work with other entrepreneurs on the island: artisans, fishermen, restaurants, tour guides, etc. In particular, we are proud of our "Collaborative Space", where artisans, entrepreneurs and artists from the area bring their products for sale, setting their prices fairly, we often advise and help them in the sales and dissemination process, not demanding a payment for commission or rent, the sale price is 100% of them.

Sustainability and respect for the environment are a basic premise in our work, what we do is always respecting and caring for the environment, animals, nature, resources, people and the community:

1.- We have reforested with trees in the area (over 400 trees and shrubs planted to date)
2.- We have rainwater collector
3.- Differentiated use of gray water which we then use for irrigation (not for cultivation)
4.- Composting (at ground level and in pit)
5.- Recycling area where cardboard, plastic, glass and bottles are washed and collected for later
removal by @reciclochiloe, counting for this with a certificate of receipt of recyclable materials by
the Municipality, which records their removal for subsequent delivery to recycling companies.
6.- Heating mainly by electric energy and efficient use of it; In addition, the entire lighting system
is LED.

Located on a plot of 2.1 hectares, our facilities have 8 rooms, living rooms located in the bedroom sector, where you can read, talk and observe the vegetation. In the dining room you can enjoy the warmth of our fireplace, share with other guests, savor a grain coffee and be surprised by the imposing landscape of the La Estancia sector; and in our Cellar (with more than 45 wine labels) you can taste a good wine, cheeses, hams and pickles, which together with an outdoor stove and its barbecue, they will make a difference in the nights you are with us.

During your stay we will guide you and help you find the best panorama, so that this is a unique experience, where you know the beautiful churches of Chiloé, enjoy its traditional festivals, its gastronomy, or surprise you with its landscapes and numerous tourist attractions.
In this way, our offer is part of the tourist classification of “boutique hotel”

    ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES

During your stay we will guide you and help you find the best panorama, so that this is a unique experience, where you know the beautiful churches of Chiloé, enjoy its traditional festivals, its gastronomy, or surprise you with its landscapes and numerous tourist attractions.

For this we work with different tour operators in the area, who in addition to their usual proposals, can offer you special alternatives depending on your interests and availability of time.

Among the different attractions and panoramas, the following stand out:

    • Islands (flora and fauna): The archipelago of Chiloé  is located in southern Chile in the Los Lagos Region, with an area of more than 9,000 km2, comprising a main island, the Isla Grande de Chiloé, and about 30 smaller islands and islets scattered between the gulfs of Ancud and Corcovado. The climate is humid and rainy (it rains all year round), which allows the existence of abundant vegetation such as ferns, nalcas, myrtles, quila, larches and tepu; being important to highlight the agricultural development of this area in the cultivation of native potatoes (today with more than 400 varieties), as well as in the cultivation of the well-known “chilote garlic”, products that have become protagonists of the tradition and reinvention of Chiloé gastronomy. Regarding its native fauna, we find endemic species such as the Chilote fox and the pudú. Other species that stand out in this area are blue and humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, Darwin’s frog, and the Chilote horse and sheep.
    • Churches: With the arrival of the  Spaniards in the mid-sixteenth century, the first Franciscan and Mercedarian religious arrived on the island of Chiloé with the mission of evangelizing the indigenous population, but it was not until 1608 with the arrival of the Jesuits that this whole process took on its own stamp given the special conditions of this territory:  isolation, dispersion of the indigenous population, natural communication by sea and its great timber wealth. Today there are more than 400 churches distributed in the archipelago, which preserve the materiality and construction techniques thanks to their care and restoration, but several of them have not stood the test of time and have had to be demolished or have collapsed. The commitment to conservvalas allowed that, in 1993, 16 of them were declared a National Monument, the same 16 that in 2000 and 2001 UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site.
    • Palafitos: wooden constructions mounted on thick piles, which at the same time as the use of larch tiles, are part of the classic architecture of this area (the stilt houses located in the Pedro Montt and Gamboa sectors stand out in Castro).
    • Tradicional Festivals:  with more than 10 traditional festivals that take place annually, many of them have their origin in religious celebrations, which over the years are combined with the realization of mingas or traditional activities, as well as gastronomy and folklore.

    Mythology and stories of Chiloé

    Mythology and stories of Chiloé

Due to its relative isolation from the continent, Chiloé developed a great culture, mythology and folklore different from the east of the country, which can be seen in its music, its dances (cueca and chilote waltz), its colorful legends and in particular in its architecture, which is appreciated mainly in its churches.

From the mixture of ancient religions of the indigenous peoples (chonos and huilliches) that inhabited this area, and from the legends and superstitions brought by the Spanish conquerors, Chiloé mythology  arises, a fusion of elements that grew by keeping its archipelago isolated from other beliefs and myths that developed or existed in Chile.

According to mythology, the Chiloé archipelago is formed from the struggle between  Tenten Vilú (or Treten Vilú) and Caicai Vilú, two great serpents of Mapuche mythology, children of the  most powerful pillanes (gods), who as punishment would have been turned into these beings.  Tenten  Vilú is the “terrestrial snake” which has the power to ominate the earth and its volcanoes, while Caicai Vilú is the “sea serpent” which has the power to dominate the sea and everything related to it. It is this same mythology that attributes magical powers to certain people, there is also the belief in sorcerers, who possess the ability to fly and would have under their command various creatures such as the invunche.

Witchcraft had great roots on the island until the twentieth century, these beliefs would come from the attribution of magical powers that were made in the past to real people, such as those who had knowledge of naturist medicine and possibly also to characters of the Mapuche tradition and religion, such as the Machi and mainly the Calcus,  merging them with the beliefs of European witches. The sorcerers, around whom a whole system of popular beliefs has also been built, became as powerful and influential during the nineteenth century as the mayor of the island himself. Grouped in a secret organization called ls ”Recta Provincia”, popularly known as the “Majority”, they had a complex organization that was partially dismantled during the famous trial of the sorcerers of Chiloé in 1880 carried out by the Court of Ancud.

Some of his best-known mythological beings are:

    • La Fiura: Popularly known as the woman of “Trauco”, her name means ugliness and would be the embodiment of vice and perversity. Of short stature, she would live in the forests next to the swamp and enjoys doing evil to those who reject her.
    • The Camahueto: With short, leaden and shiny fur, shaped like a calf, its main characteristic is the horn in the middle of its forehead (like a unicorn). When the Chilotes encounter one of these beings, they hire a sorcerer to extract the horn and turn him into a manzo lamb; And with the scraping of their horn the machis prepare a potion to cure various diseases, as well as restore vigor and sexual potency to fallen men.
    • El Trauco: It lives in the forests and stands out for its strength, although it has no feet, so it carries a stone axe or wooden staff known as “Pahueldún”. Legend has it that he attacks young, unmarried women to make them pregnant, bewitching them to seduce them despite their horrible appearance.
    • The Pincoya: Imaginary marine creature with the appearance of a young and very beautiful woman, with long blonde hair and white complexion, which unlike the Chilota Mermaid (which has a fish tail), has a completely human appearance. Its mission is to protect the sea, sow it and protect the castaways.
    • El Caleuche: Mysterious ship that sails and roams the seas of Chiloé and the south of our country. It is said to be manned by very powerful sorcerers. Certain conditions, such as foggy days, make it possible to see or feel it.

    Surroundings

The protagonists of our proposal are undoubtedly the hotel as a whole and the landscape that surrounds us, where the main view is offered by the “La Estancia” sector and the Lemuy Canal, to which the hotel surrenders in all its views, and in whose background you can distinguish some of the volcanoes of the mountain range that Los Andes presents on the mainland.

To further enhance the landscape and its experience, we have the excellent work and proposal of the landscaper Paola Garrido, a professional with great experience and knowledge of the island and its species. This is how the use of quarry stone (the only one that exists in the Huillinco sector) was conjured, the above through volumes of great height (more than two meter) and the grouping of medium and small elements at gutter level, external stairs, small stone fences, and sediment to demarcate undulating and simple roads. All this game of forms, which allows to balance the best use of water, is combined with species of the area, for many common, but of great beauty, honesty and representativeness of this landscape of the insular Patagonia; such as Poe, Calle Calle, Helechos and Pangue, which are harmoniously complemented with medicinal and fruit plants, as well as native trees such as Coigüe, Canelo, Ciruelillo and Luma, among others. We have also been privileged with three eyes of groundwater water, which we not only take care of for what the water represents today, but because they are home to frogs, insects and birds such as the Chucao, Thrush, Choroy Parrot, Hummingbird and even some ducks that use the “facilities”.

You will be able to discover all this by walking along the paths that we have made, with small bridges and catwalks in order to ease the displacement of all who visit us.

How to Get Here

Location:
We are located in the sector of La Estancia, Rilán Peninsula, on the large island of Chiloé, approximately 45 minutes south east of the Mocopulli de Castro airport (40 kms).

Castro is the capital of the Province of Chiloé, is located 172 kilometers south of the city of Puerto Montt (continental Chile), and is the third oldest city in our country. Located in the sector of Quiquilhue (“place where cow rib ferns abound”, in Mapudungun) by the Spanish conquerors, who took possession of the Chiloé archipelago in 1567. According to the last census of 2017 it has a population of 43,807 inhabitants.

The Rilán peninsula is located on the other side of the Castro fjord, a rural sector whose main activity is agriculture and fishing, with tourism being one of the fastest growing activities, highlighting its 6 viewpoints that offer incredible views of the archipelago, agrotourism farms, and the wonderful Santa María de Rilán Church, one of the 16 wooden churches of Chiloé recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 2000. Located in the town of the same name, this church began its construction in 1908, which ended more than ten years later in 1920, being restored in 2012.
